Looking Ahead: Fan Engagement for FIFA World Cup 2026 Host Cities

FIFA Fan Festivals

The FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America is coming next year, and anticipation is building across the host cities in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. While official matches will dominate headlines, there is a real opportunity for brands, municipalities, and sponsors that lies beyond the stadiums in the streets, parks, plazas, and public venues where millions of fans will gather to celebrate this unique global event. In this blog post, we will discuss the FIFA Fan Festivals and the fan engagement zones that the World Cup will bring to host cities, and how they present an exceptional opportunity for brands to connect with fans.

What the World Cup Means for Host Cities

This is the first time the World Cup will be hosted jointly by three countries. It marks the largest tournament in history, featuring 48 teams and is expected to inject over $5 billion into North American economies. This means that host cities stand to benefit significantly from increased tourism, international exposure, and elevated civic pride. But more than that, the World Cup offers a rare opportunity to unify diverse communities around a shared passion, get global exposure, and show the world the best of the host cities to attract future foreign investments.

What Is a FIFA Fan Festival?

FIFA Fan Festivals are the official FIFA-sanctioned public viewing events held in the host cities during the tournament. These large-scale gatherings offer free access to live match broadcasts, live music, local food, and interactive sponsor activations. They are a sort of public stadium for the people who couldn’t get a spot in the match, or to watch other matches happening in different locations, with a festival atmosphere.

With matches broadcast on massive LED screens and fan activities between games, FIFA Fan Festivals allow fans to feel part of the global moment, even if they’re thousands of kilometres from the stadium. Attendance is often open and free, making them the most accessible touchpoint for brand activations targeting both local and international audiences.

Understanding Fan Engagement Zones

In addition to the larger Fan Festivals, many host cities and sponsors will create their own version of fan engagement zones. Those are the smaller-scale versions designed to bring people into the game through interactive experiences, sponsor activations, and digital-first storytelling. These zones may be mobile, modular, or tied to specific neighbourhoods, and they’re typically used to amplify brand presence outside official FIFA spaces.

For brands and host committees, fan engagement zones are ideal for delivering high-value experiential marketing campaigns and capitalizing on the unique emotional moments of the World Cup to leave a lasting impression on the audience. A well-done campaign will become part of the journey of how fans experience the World Cup, associating your brand with that special occasion.

What to Expect in Engagement Zones

As mentioned above, brands can capitalize on the fan engagement zone by executing creative brand activations such as gamified challenges, immersive photo ops, interactive installations, immersive environments, pop-up bars, and more. The most effective engagement zones are built on interaction and immersion. Thus, visitors can expect:

  • Hands-on brand activations: Interactive challenges, touchscreens, or games that allow fans to play, compete, and share.
  • AR and projection mapping displays: Visually striking installations that merge the physical and digital worlds.
  • Social content stations: Branded photo opportunities designed for shareability, often enhanced by real-time displays or audience-generated content walls.
  • Cultural and community programming: Installations that highlight local talent, history, or community partnerships.
  • Food and beverage: Thematic bars related to the World Cup
  • Football, football and more football: Immersive experiences related to the World Cup and Real-time streaming of matches.

These zones are highly flexible and can be customized for different neighbourhoods, languages, and audience demographics, making them a scalable solution for cities looking to activate at multiple levels.

MLS All-Star Interactive Soccer Game: An Example of Fan Engagement Zone Brand Activation

In 2023, Go2 Productions was selected to design and deliver an interactive soccer installation for the MLS All-Star Game weekend in Orlando. In partnership with Wasserman, we created a branded experience for the major sponsor that combined football, technology, and adrenaline, all displayed on a massive outdoor LED wall behind a goal net.

The challenge was to create a real-time soccer game that fans could walk up to and play, utilizing immersive technology. To achieve this, Go2 created an interactive penalty game where fans had to kick soccer balls towards moving targets on the LED Screens with a timer. The more targets the fan hit, the higher the score they got, with the opportunity to appear on the leaderboard of the best players. The result was consistent lineups, highly engaged participants, and one of the most popular features of the fan engagement zone.

As World Cup 2026 approaches, we see this as a model for what’s possible in host cities, so you can expect to see this same energy scaled up in 2026 and with the implementation of the newest immersive technologies, such as AI.
